OGARITHS

ORIGIN:

(Oga-Arel-Ith = Those borne by breath/wind): The first of all peoples created in Yrneh. They are the blessed children of Naör, Regent of the Gaïanor and master of the upper stratum of air. This people is the ancestor of the Elves. More precisely, they are identical in every respect to their descendants except for their hair and the existence of a broad pair of wings that allow them to fly high in the firmament. Their legitimate sovereign is Danreb. The Ogariths appeared in year 25 of the First Cycle. Their height varies between 1m90 and 2m20; the men are distinguished by tousled brown hair and the women have very long blonde/red hair. They command magic, but only the elements belonging to the Stratum of Airs.

POLITICAL STRUCTURE:

The royal Ogarith houses are hierarchized independently from one another. Only Danreb, who is the oldest of the Ogariths and the bravest, is designated as Supreme Prince. Nevertheless, this title only has value in wartime, for in normal times he rules only his territory of the Ancient Mountains.

LANGUAGE:

This is the oldest language of Yrneh and it is called: Ogarudh. It was created by the first creatures shaped by Commander Naör, when telepathic communication was abandoned in order to record history and customs. It is a language of breath, very soft and melodious. The Elves also practice this language both for speaking and for recounting events.

CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS:

Marriage: Among the Ogariths, marriage is celebrated over three days. For this race, marriage rests on affinities that children possess among themselves from a very young age. The male Ogarith, once adult, courts the one he loves for one full year. The young woman who allows herself to be courted thereby shows her agreement, but leaves this duration in order to give her final approval. Before the marriage, there is a 30-day prenuptial period during which the betrothed do not see one another and are both kept outside the community, in completely opposite places. This is meant to test their feelings. During the ceremony, the future spouses exchange the respective pendants they received at birth. They then pronounce the following words: « I am yours, you are mine ».

Birth: Birth among the Ogariths resembles no other birth in all of Yrneh. On the day a child comes into the world, which is a rare event among this people, the men form a guard of honor with their wings. The father advances beneath this canopy carrying his child in his arms. Afterwards the newborn is placed on the altar where the priestess will cover it with oils using 4 feathers: that of the father, the mother, the godfather and the godmother on 4 parts of the child's body. First the father's so that the child may have « body », then the mother's so that it may have heart, the godfather's for the mind, and the godmother's so that during its first flight the child may obtain the grace inherent to its people. The choice of the godmother is made by the mother within her close circle; that of the godfather is more random, indeed the Ogarith who loses a feather first in the guard of honor will be designated, thus ensuring greater group cohesion. The birth flower among the Ogariths is the edelweiss.

Death: Death among the Ogarith people is scarcely described except for those who die in battle because the winged people are immortal. When an Ogarith dies, its body gradually fades from reality and leaves behind only a feather. Only a stela is raised in memory of the one who has disappeared, and an edelweiss is laid upon it. (note that the edelweiss is the only flower for the Ogariths because its rarity and purity match the rarity of births and deaths, and recall the harmony and the cycle that life and death constitute.)
